Greylag geese (Anser anser), are migratory birds that winter in India. They are considered as ancestors of all domestic geese in the west. In ancient times, they were considered sacred and revered by many civilisations. Legend has it that they saved the city of Rome in 390 BC from an attack of Gauls by alerting the Romans with their loud calls.
